The Bridges Academy in West Islip, NY is seeking a Literacy Specialist to join the team of  educators in the Lower Division, grades K-5. This Literacy Specialist will work  to ensure that students have the skills and support they need to be successful in our program. 


The Literacy Specialist’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Student Support

    • Support, supplement and extend classroom literacy instruction to small groups of students , specifically early intervention between K-2.  (virtual as needed)

    • Push in facilitation as needed for reading, writing and word study

  • Collaboration

    • Work in partnership with other teachers and administration to ensure the success of each child.

    • Will support reading groups as needed in unison with each grade level teacher through the Lower grades.

    • Communication and collaborate with parents on student progress.

  • Reading and Writing Specialist

    • Administer, score and analyze running records

    • Support students’ writing development using a workshop model

    • Support teachers in planning and implementation of English literacy curriculum

    • Provide input on reading and writing curriculum

    • Support professional development and provide literacy coaching for teachers in grades 3-5

    • Use Orton Gillingham, TC, Fountas and Pinnell, Foresman curriculum and resources as needed

    • Support admissions team with student placement and assessment of candidates to our school. (possible limited summer hours)
