Thanks to the creativity, hard work, and dedication of our teachers and staff, The Bridges Academy has emerged as a leader in distance learning. We are expanding our offerings with a summer program as another way to provide every student with the tools required for success. Read on to learn about our summer opportunities and to register through SmartTuition (under the "Purchase Optional Items" tab).

Music (Grades 4-8)

Basic music theory for students entering Junior Band and the incoming 5th graders entering Senior Band. Introductory instrumental lessons for those students entering 4th grade/Junior Band will also be offered. If you are entering 4th grade and are interested in beginning an instrument, information regarding instrument rental and the book that is needed is available. Learn to Draw and Paint with Art Teacher Amy!

Step-by-step instruction online. We will draw animals, landscapes, and works by famous artists.  There is personal attention and time for questions. Learn science and geography facts, as well as color theory and art history in my art classes! ​ ​

Chess Club (Grades 1-8)

Students will receive a 40-minute lesson and then break for play on an online platform. The lessons consist of reviewing participants’ games from their tournament, puzzle contests, and team games. These classes are designed to present chess as a constructive form of recreation that the children enjoy. Instructor Brian Karen is ranked within the top 3% of tournament players. He has introduced chess to children in successful classes across Long Island for more than two decades. ​

STEM (PreK-2), (Grades 2-6)

Pre-K-2

Pre-K–2:​ Students will study astronomy. We will look at each planet in great detail. We will study different constellations and when they appear in the sky. Students will make a diorama of their favorite planet after making a planet trading card. Many more space-like ideas will be studied in this cosmic class.

June: Tuesday/Thursday 9:30–11 am​

Grades 2-6

Since the summer is on the way, students will engage in summer-type STEM projects. Students will build, explore, and determine the different ways to construct these projects. The students will see how to keep items cool without melting, how to actually melt something with the weather, how to make a slick waterslide, and many more projects that incorporate aspects of the summer.

Pool noodles, toothpicks, scissors, construction paper, plastic straws, Scotch tape, cardboard scraps, plastic wrap, rubber bands, envelopes, yarn, toilet paper/paper towel rolls, glue (liquid or glue stick), markers/crayons/colored pencils, Popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, small cups, aluminum foil, cotton balls, chocolate bar​

Book Club (Grades K-4)

This course will include group “Meets” to discuss the book, read together, and complete fun activities. It will be conducted like a literature circle.

 

July: Tuesday/Thursday 1:30–3:00 pm

Word Work (Grades K-4)

This course will be done via Google Meets. We will utilize magnetic letters and focus on a different word principle each session. The children will manipulate the letters on their end to isolate sounds, blends, digraphs, etc., and build words to facilitate greater understanding of how words work. ​

The course is for remediation and/or enrichment depending on student need. Math concepts will be taught through instruction and manipulatives with a game component, while also using the technology at our disposal. ​

MIDDLE SCHOOL 5-8

Getting Ready for Middle School:  Students will be introduced to the metric system of measuring, read scientific articles that are age-appropriate and intellectually stimulating, and learn how to conduct a science experiment utilizing the scientific method. Students will be encouraged to experiment and explore their world around them as well as build a greater sense of inquiry to appreciate the journey of learning. ​

Muscle Up for Middle School Math

(Grades 4-5)

This fun class will include a review of the basic skills that will be beneficial for the Middle School Math curriculum, which culminates in 8th grade algebra.

Continuing Middle School Math

(Grades 6-8)

This course is designed to be a mathematics “boot camp” to prepare students for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Content from the Middle School math curriculum will be reinforced and practiced and is designed to focus students' minds going into the new year by reviewing previous material and looking forward to topics in the upcoming year.

Middle School Skill Builder

(Grades 5-8)

This class is designed to reinforce some basics in annotation, comprehension, analysis, and response to fiction and nonfiction texts. Students will practice application of these skills on shorter texts in preparation for more in-depth work during the school year. This course will be geared toward incoming fifth and sixth graders but would also be beneficial to incoming seventh graders struggling with these foundational concepts.
